Children of Anthony Sando(e) 1743-1751

When this period begins, there is only one family, Anthony and Joan, following the deaths of Gertrude’s Anthony and Hannah Stodan in 1742. New marriages are  Anthony Sandoe and Mary Runals at Kenwyn on 15 Feb 1742/43 and Anthony Sandoe and Bridget Dunston at Kenwyn on 4 Nov 1744. There were no known new Anthonies of age, so one of these Anthonies is unknown, while one is a second marriage of Hannah Stoddan’s Anthony who was widowed in 1742 (see Children of Anthony 1736-1742). Gertude never remarried after the death of her Anthony. The will of Bridget’s Anthony identifies him as Hannah’s, so Mary Runals married the unknown Anthony. This period ends with the death of Mary Runals in November 1751.There was thus one family of Anthony during 1742-43 just before this period (Anthony and Joasn), then two in 1743-44 (with Anthony and Mary) and finally three (from 1744) (with Anthony and Bridget). Baptisms in this period continue to give only the father’s name.

Children of Anthony

1. Francis Sando baptised at Kenwyn on 4 Apr 1743.

Francis could belong to any of these families, either a recently born son of Joan or Mary, or an unbaptised son of Hannah from the previous year. Anthony and Hannah’s previous baptised son was Anthony in April 1742, and Hannah died in Nov 1742. There is no clear evidence of the future of this Francis. There were Francis marriages in Crowan and Gwinnear, but there were also local Francises there. There were Francis burials in 1764, 1780 and 1785, all at Gwennap, but there were also other Francises in the Kenwyn-Gwennap area.

2. John Sando baptised at Kenwyn on 16 Apr 1745.

John could belong to any of the families. But Bridget’s Anthony already had a son John with Hannah in 1737, who is attested in Anthony’s will. A son is expected around 1740 for Anthony and Joan (at age 10 in 1749 he was named 3rd life on a lease). The John Sandoe who married Elizabeth Staple at Gwennap in 1766, would also have been born around 1740. That marriage was witnessed by an Anthony Sandoe, which links him to the Anthony tradition. Anthony and Hannah’s John was already married, so this marriage is assumed to be this 1745 John, and his parents Anthony and Joan. Elizabeth Staple died in 1767. See Anthony [5] below for a possible second marriage.

3. Hannah Sandoe baptised at Kenwyn on 26 Dec 1746.

Hannah is attested in the will of Bridget’s Anthony and must be their’s.

4. Ann Sandoe baptised at Kenwyn on 1 May 1747.

Ann could belong to any of these families, but the baptism is just five months after Hannah’s so she may be Joan’s or Mary’s. Ann Sandoe, daughter of Anthony, was buried at Kenwyn on 1 Oct 1749.

5. Anthony Sando baptised at Kenwyn 19 Mar 1748/49.

Bridget’s Anthony already had a son Anthony with Hannah in 1742 who was the executor of his will. Only one son Anthony is attested in that will. The 1748/49. Anthony must consequently be Joan’s or Mary’s. Further, he is most likely to be the Anthony Sandoe who married Philippa Holmes in Tavistock, Devon, in 1773. There were three Anthonies baptised around 1750, and three Anthony marriages in the 1770s,. Hannah’s Anthony married Grace Lobb at Kenwyn in 1772, attested by Grace’s will in 1817. A second Anthony, baptised in 1752, married Alice Roberts in 1774, attested by his death record in 1827 and his probate in 1834. This leaves this 1748/49 Anthony for Philippa Holmes, in 1773 by default. Philippa’s sister Armanel Holmes had already married a John Sandoe at Tavistock in 1771. Assuming Anthony and John were brothers, this could be John [2] above.

6. Joanna Sando baptised at Kenywn 17 Jun 1749

Joanna could belong to any of these families, excepting that the baptism comes just a few months after Anthony [5]. At the same time, the next baptism Christian [7] in October is more closely associated with Anthony and Bridget. There is no further trace of any Joanna, except for a marriage of Joan in 1791.

7. Christian Sandoe baptised at Kenywn 10 Oct 1749.

This is further baptism after only a few months interval. The name Christian or Kitty is subsequently found only among the descendents of Hannah’s and Bridget’s Anthony (among the various Anthony branches, that is). This Christian is very likely to be Anthony and Bridget’s. The date, 10 October, is an echo of the previous Christian, who was christened on 10 Oct 1738 and who died in January 1748/49. There is no further trace of Christian.

8. Hugh Sandoe baptised at Kenywn 5 Sep 1750.

Hugh could belong to any of these families. The name Hugh is an innovation as there is no previous example of its use in any Sandoe family. The namesake might turn up in one of the in-law families and offer a clue. There is no further trace of Hugh.
