In pencil on back, bold and large “S Sandoe HMS Robin” (Sidney Sandoe served on HMS Robin from April 1902 to August 1904). Sidney Sandoe died 27 July 1911 at RN Hospital, Gillingham; harbourman at Sheerness Dockyard; naval pensioner; age 42; chronic interstitial nephritis; heart failure; registered Medway 1911SEP 2a/912. Sources: DC, GRO. According to daughters Marie and Clarice, he took part in a sea rescue in the estuary in a storm in Feb/March, came home wet through, and never returned to work again.
